Snapchat introduces ‘My AI’ chatbot

Snapchat is introducing its "My AI" chatbot to all of its 750 million monthly users for free.

This comes after the bot was first made available to the app's three million paid subscribers two months ago.

The chatbot, powered by OpenAI, is now an integral part of Snapchat, allowing users to change the look and name of their bot with a custom Bitmoji avatar.

Additionally, My AI can suggest AR filters to use in Snapchat's camera or places to visit from the app's map tab.

Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel sees the technology as a "creative tool", citing personal examples of using My AI to create bedtime stories for his children and plan a birthday itinerary for his wife.

Although My AI could be used for advertising purposes, Spiegel remains tight-lipped about its potential impact.

Despite early controversies, Spiegel says the overwhelming majority of interactions with My AI have been positive.

West must ‘win AI race’, says UK chancellor

UK Chancellor Jeremy Hunt has called for a full-scale adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in the country, downplaying warnings of job losses from the technology.

Speaking at the Politico Tech UK event in London, Hunt said the fears about mass job losses due to AI were overblown and the technology could make a “major contribution” to boost the country's productivity.

He added that the UK must "win the race" to set global standards for the emerging technology.

Despite potential negative consequences of AI, Hunt believes it is not possible for countries to opt out of this race, and it is necessary to regulate it in a way that is a force for good and enhances values.

The UK government is investing heavily in AI research and development, with Hunt previously outlining ambitions to make the UK the “world's next Silicon Valley”.
