Meta AI introduces ‘Segment Anything’
Meta (AI), the company formerly known as Facebook, introduced today ‘Segment Anything’.
Segment Anything (or SAM) is an AI tool that is like a “GPT-3 moment” for computer vision. It has learned the general concept of what a “object” is, even for unknown objects, unfamiliar scenes (e.g. underwater & cell microscopy), and undecided cases.
Segmentation - identifying which image pixels belong to an object - is a core task in computer vision and is used in a broad array of applications, from analysing scientific imagery to editing photos.
The ‘Segment Anything Model’ and its data are groundbreaking in that they are open sourced (find the data and research here) which makes the architecture very scalable, it’s all there: it takes multimodal prompts, text, key points and bounding boxes.
This technology can be used in many ways and applied in day-to-day situations. In webdesign, photography and architecture. And later for example in surgery to identify organs and check its shape, or on a cellular level it will be able to recognise what objects are, which will be beneficial in battling diseases.
The “internet of things” seems to have arrived early.
Google reveals its newest A.I. supercomputer, says it beats Nvidia
Google published details about one of its artificial intelligence supercomputers on Wednesday, saying it is faster and more efficient than competing Nvidia systems.
While Nvidia dominates the market for AI model training and deployment, with over 90%, Google has been designing and deploying AI chips called Tensor Processing Units, or TPUs, since 2016.
Google’s TPU-based supercomputer, called TPU v4, is “1.2x–1.7x faster and uses 1.3x–1.9x less power than the Nvidia A100,” the Google researchers wrote.
AI models and products such as Google’s Bard or OpenAI’s ChatGPT — require a lot of computers and hundreds or thousands of chips to work together to train models, with the computers running around the clock for weeks or months.
For example, Google said that Midjourney, an AI image generator, was trained on its TPU chips.
