AI Takeover of Google Search Starts Now

Google is taking AI to a new level, and not in the way you might think. The future of its search results page is about to be changed by its Generative AI snapshots.

That’s right, instead of an LLM that answers questions directly, Google puts AI on top of search results — called AI snapshots.

Google's VP of Search, Liz Reid, explained that the snapshots will offer corroboration, so that when the LLM says something, it tells the reader what other sources to read about that topic.

The AI snapshot will appear at the top of search and pull information from all over the web.

Google's new search product is colorful, AI-first and powered by some of Google’s most advanced LLM work to date.

To access the AI snapshots, users must opt-in to a new feature called Search Generative Experience (SGE).

Although the AI appears only when Google’s algorithms think it’s more useful than standard results, it is still changing the way people search.

EU Leads the World Building Guardrails Around AI

EU lawmakers are creating rules (guard rails) for artificial intelligence (AI), and things are heating up.

A parliamentary committee recently voted to bolster the proposed legislation, which seeks to set up guidelines for AI systems according to four levels of risk, from minimal to unacceptable.

The goal is to safeguard against AI threats to health and safety and protect fundamental rights and values, while avoiding a "controlled society based on AI."

The EU has no shortage of motivation, as advances in AI continue to reveal new benefits and perils.

Plus, by instilling confidence among users, Brussels hopes to unlock the economic and social potential of AI.

Violations of the new rules could result in fines of up to €30 million ($33 million) or 6% of a company’s annual global revenue.

EU lawmakers are expected to vote on the draft legislation in mid-June.
